FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa. – Spc. Jackson Chilcote, a dental specialist with the 108th Area Support Medical Company, 213th Regional Support Group, Pennsylvania Army National Guard, loves shooting at the range here.

The Hustontown, Pa. native called shooting his M16 rifle one of the best parts of being in the Army.

“The last time I qualified I shot 40 out of 40 and in basic training I shot 38 out of 40,” said Chilcote, who joined the Pennsylvania National Guard after seeing the things his brother, an infantryman, accomplished and wanted to follow in his footsteps.

Chilcote is a freshman majoring in biology at Shippensburg University, which the Guard helps pay for. He said he chose to be a dental specialist because those skills would transfer to a civilian career.

“I feel like my Guard experience prepares me for life, it makes me more responsible, it makes me more knowledgeable,” said Chilcote. “It helps you be more well-rounded and not make stupid mistakes.”

Chilcote plans to re-enlist at the end of his current contract, but is still undecided whether he wants to stay in for a full 20 years and retire from the Guard.
