MECHANICSBURG, Pa. –- Navy Mobile Computing (NMC) teams from Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Business Systems Center (BSC) are deploying mobile technology and support to deliver improved logistics readiness to the fleet.

“NMC serves our warfighter’s logistics needs by presenting total asset visibility of enterprise-wide supply-chain operations,” said Laurie Tyler, NMC project manager at NAVSUP BSC Regional Support Site Jacksonville. “NMC delivers connectivity for mobile devices to various automated information systems, including Navy Enterprise Resource Planning.”

Utilizing secure mobile technology, NMC provides a real-time transactional solution that improves inventory accuracy and efficiency using computer hardware, software, data, and telecommunications to collect, process, and transmit information.

“We’re always looking for new technology, the latest and greatest, next phase of mobile computing,” said Tamaria Helm, NMC technical lead, NAVSUP BSC Regional Support Site Jacksonville.

NAVSUP BSC’s NMC teams are comprised of the mobile device management team and Regional Support Site teams.

Management teams build the production environment and configuration of mobile devices. They research platform and architectural solutions to deliver the most efficient hardware and software. Regional Support Site teams provide support to customers.

“That includes on and off-site assistance with mobile devices, printers, maintenance, and training as well as help desk support,” said Tyler.

NMC is also an element of the Navy Automatic Identification Technology (AIT) Program.

“Navy AIT’s objective is to provide and support a standard set of devices that can be used to minimize cost while accurately and efficiently capturing logistics data at its source,” said Tyler.

AIT is a component of efforts across the DoD to provide timely total asset visibility, track and control items over their lifecycle, support knowledge-enabled logistics and readiness, increase inventory accuracy, and reduce repetitive logistic requirements.

“Navy-wide use of standard AIT components and procedures achieves significant savings in AIT lifecycle management and personnel training costs by maintaining standard equipment and operating systems that reduces turn over in hardware and training spin up,” said Tyler. “NMC has the ability to remotely modify and manage specific configuration requirements for various Navy logistic sites.”

NAVSUP BSC provides the Navy with information systems support through the design, development, and maintenance of information systems in the functional areas of logistics, supply chain management, transportation, finance, and accounting and is one of 11 commands under Commander, NAVSUP. Headquartered in Mechanicsburg, Pa., and employing a diverse, worldwide workforce of more than 22,500 military and civilian personnel, NAVSUP's mission is to provide supplies, services, and quality-of-life support to the Navy and joint warfighter.
