Story by Staff Sgt. Shameeka Stanley

    500th Military Intelligence Brigade-Theater

Sgt. Timothy L. Wood, an intelligence analyst assigned to Bravo Company, 205th Military Intelligence Battalion, 500th Military Intelligence Brigade-Theater (MIB-T), is named the 500th MIB-T Vanguard of the Month for April 2019.

Wood is an outstanding military intelligence professional, mentor and Soldier. He performs well beyond his current duties and uses his experiences and communication skills to improve the unit morale, cohesion, and overall understanding of the operational environment.

As an analyst in the Indo-Pacific regional team, he has become a subject matter expert on regional intelligence and threats. He has trained nearly a dozen Soldiers in the Analysis Control Element (ACE) on All-Source analysis war-fighting functions and tasks. Wood leverages these opportunities to teach, coach and mentor Soldiers into subject matter experts in their own right.

“For a long time, I was nervous because I am an introvert, but the more I teach, the more comfortable I get,” said Wood. “It gives you that sense of pride and you’re seeing these Soldiers grow. They’re almost like your kids. You get to see them develop and you’re proud of them.”

Wood was selected above his peers to serve as a lead analyst in the U.S. Army Pacific (USARPAC) Deployable Intelligence Control Element (DISE), where he assisted in the planning and coordinating the deploy-ability of equipment and personnel.

Inspired by his father’s leadership, courage, selfless service and commitment to duty, Wood enlisted in the Army in 2014. His humble beginnings and determination to do something with his life motivated him be just as courageous as his father and serve his country.

“I feel like if he wouldn’t have joined [the Army] then I probably would have ended up in a lot of bad stuff,” said Wood. “I feel like he kind of saved my life in a way because I could be much worse off now.”

Wood, a native of Winston Salem, North Carolina, is the youngest of three brothers. His father is a retired Army veteran and one of his brothers is currently serving on active duty in the Army as well.

Wood expressed his gratitude for his leadership, past and present, who has helped to shape and mold him into the leader that he is today, and the leader he aspires to be. Wood’s hands-on and personable leadership style allows Soldiers to be open and transparent with him, which allows him to be an effective leader and ensure that the Soldiers and their families are taken care of.

“Although I just got promoted [in January], I know these Soldiers very well,” said Wood. “I know how they learn and I can actually sit down and talk to them and they are not nervous or afraid to talk to me.”

Beyond his professional sacrifices, Wood’s loyalty is beyond approach and maintains a high sense of morale within the unit. He takes pride in taking care of Soldiers and seeing them succeed whether it is assisting Soldiers with studying techniques for boards, one-on-one analytical development or encourage behavioral health intervention. Wood is certainly one of many who live up to the Army Values in all that he do.

“We all have days when we don’t feel like giving 100% but as long as you have more days when you’re trying your best, then you’ll be alright,” said Wood.

Wood looks forward to earning a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations and increasing his military education and training as he continues to move up in the ranks.
