FORT HOOD, Texas – Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center celebrated the accomplishments of women past and present at the Women’s History Month observance, March 22 in the hospital atrium.

This year’s theme, Visionary Women: Champions of Peace and Nonviolence, honors women who have shaped America's history and its future through their tireless commitment to ending discrimination against women and girls

The keynote speaker was Col. Deitra Trotter, commander 504th Military Intelligence Bde., who went from a private to a brigade commander in her 29-year Army career.

“These days, women play an active role in serving our country through military service, but that wasn’t always the case. The changes are profound – women now serve in combat arms, can go to Ranger School – and we continue to gain opportunities for women in the services. It’s an exciting time to be in uniform,” Trotter said.

She serves because she believes it’s her turn to pay forward the investment that countless leaders put into a sometimes feisty, sometimes stubborn, wildly driven Soldier who kept getting tired of being told “you can’t” or ‘that’s not for you.”

“Opportunity is not equal but I do believe in equal opportunity for all. Every person with the desire to serve must reach their full potential – for the sake of our institution. I am committed to doing my part,” she said. “How you treat/value people is a reflection of who you are and ultimately, will be your legacy. There is enough success for everyone. Strive to help those around you achieve the most out of life.”

March was chosen as the month to celebrate women’s history because the first observances of Women’s History Week revolved around International Women’s Day March 8 which was first celebrated in 1911 to honor women’s achievements worldwide.
