A burial service is set for a U.S. Army soldier who died during the Korean War.
Army Corporal Frederick E. Coon, 22, a native of Fairview Township, Missouri, will be buried with full military honors on Wednesday, in Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, Kansas.
Coon was a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, when he was reported missing in action on July 29, 1950 in the vicinity of South Gyeongsang Province, South Korea.
In 1952, his were among a set of three unidentified remains recovered from a shallow, temporary grave near the village of Apkong-ni, South Korea. His remains were buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, known as the Punchbowl, in Honolulu until they were disinterred in March 2018.
To positively identify Coon’s remains, scientists from the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) and the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System used mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), dental and anthropological analysis, as well as circumstantial and material evidence.
Coon was positively identified on Oct. 29, 2018.
