Defenders with the 1st Special Operations Security Forces Squadron conducted a dorm-wide Bike Rodeo at Hurlburt Field, Florida April 4.
A Bike Rodeo is an installation-wide round up of all abandoned bicycles and vehicles at the dormitories. Defenders conduct rodeos as needed every couple years to keep the dormitories and base area clean.
Defenders routinely clean the dorms of excessive abandoned property and clutter, which allows Air Commandos focus on their jobs and not cleaning up the dorms.
“The Bike Rodeo helps keep all of the bike racks clean and [gives] [dorm management] the chance to clean all of the old leaves and clutter that has piled up” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Kayla Walton, airman dorm leader with the 1st Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron. “Roughly 100 bikes were taken from the dorms that had been abandoned, rusted out or unusable.”
No vehicles were identified for removal during the defender’s sweep, according to U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Dwayne McLain, an investigator with the 1st Special Operations Security Forces Squadron.
Tags were placed on bicycles that were not registered through dorm management or had flat or no tires a week prior to the Bike Rodeo. The tags notified owners that actions needed to be taken to keep their bikes from being taken during the Bike Rodeo.
On the morning of the rodeo, previously placed tags were checked to see if the owner made the corrections. If corrections were not made, the bicycles were removed and put it in the back of a truck. If the bicycle had a lock or was chained up, bolt cutters were used to remove it.
Airmen have 30 days from the date of pick up to contact the 1st SOSFS Investigations Section if they wish to have the bike returned. Airmen must provide proof of ownership in order to reclaim the item.
“You’ll need a general description of the bike for us to acknowledge that it is yours,” said McLain.
The Hurlburt Field Disposal Board will determine what happens to all items not claimed within the 30-day hold of the abandoned property. Easily repaired bikes will be released to the Airman’s Attic and the non-working bikes and vehicles to DRMO.
