The Military Sealift Command hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 190 played host to a visit from Ambassador Henne Schuwer of the Kingdom of the Netherlands April 15, in San Diego. The visit was part of a Southern California tour by the ambassador.

Schuwer and his entourage, which included his wife Lena Boman, toured the medical treatment facility onboard Mercy, let by Capt. John Volk, acting commanding officer of the Military Treatment Facility. Also in attendance, answering questions, were Capt. John Olmsted, Mercy’s civil service master, and Timothy McCully, deputy commander, Military Sealift Command Pacific. The tour included Casualty Reception, X-Ray Department, operating rooms, and intensive care unit and the isolation unit.

“Seeing Mercy up-close has been very interesting and educational,” said Schuwer. “We have been very interested in having Comfort visit Curaçao, which is a Dutch territory in the Caribbean. Having seen Mercy, I can go back and talk to my colleagues about the capabilities of this great ship.”

Mercy is currently on station in San Diego, Calif. in a reduced operating status, training and planning for its next mission.
