NIWC Atlantic Highlights Capabilities During CNO Visit

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) visited Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Atlantic April 12 to see firsthand how the team delivers information warfare solutions that protect national security.

CNO Adm. John Richardson kicked off the visit to the Charleston campus by chatting with NIWC Atlantic military members and then learning about innovations being developed for technology transition to the warfighter.

“The CNO’s visit is a great opportunity to demonstrate the breadth and scope of the NIWC Atlantic domain, and to exhibit the commitment and passion of our innovative and agile team to fight and win the wars of the future,” said Christopher Miller, NIWC Atlantic executive director.

NIWC Atlantic demonstrated how additive manufacturing is being used for 3D printing to enable rapid solutions to materiel problems, as well as exploring new applications for this technology. He also saw how NIWC Atlantic employees are developing better ways to automate and filter data from disparate sources, and how scientists are working to put autonomous technology in the hands of warfighters.

Richardson was then briefed on NIWC Atlantic’s other key technical capabilities and technology growth areas, and on specific information warfare projects and innovations that are saving warfighter lives. He learned about NIWC Atlantic’s rapid prototyping and experimentation initiatives and participation in the Urban 5th Generation Marine and Fight the Naval Force Forward fleet demonstrations. NIWC Atlantic demonstrated how it is cultivating the next generation technical workforce, and engaging in the community with more than 500 volunteers through dozens of outreach programs.

“We are uniquely equipped with qualified, world-class scientists and engineers who deliver solutions to complex warfighting problems,” said Capt. Wesley Sanders, NIWC Atlantic commanding officer. “It's important that we operate on the cutting edge as we deliver information warfare solutions at the right time in the right way for our nation.”

Further discussions showed how NIWC Atlantic is maximizing electromagnetic maneuver warfare capabilities to ensure battlespace awareness for Sailors and Marines. Subject matter experts discussed cyber forensics developments and other advanced technologies that are enhancing warfighters’ situational awareness.

Richardson’s visit also offered an opportunity to provide updates on programs that are speeding capabilities to the warfighter, such as NIWC Atlantic’s Information Warfare Research Project, which uses an Other Transaction Authority to rapidly prototype and deliver products to the fleet.

While onboard NIWC Atlantic, the CNO also engaged in a meaningful dialogue with the NIWC Atlantic leadership team and underlined the sense of urgency we must have as leaders and members of our U.S. Navy team.
