KEYPORT, Wash. (NNS) -- Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) Puget Sound honored Vietnam veterans during National Vietnam War Veterans Day March 29.

Commanding Officer Capt. Bernie Knox along with NAVSUP FLC Puget Sound leadership paid tribute to Vietnam veterans at a commemoration ceremony hosted by the Naval Undersea Museum-Keyport. Vietnam-era veteran civilian employees accompanied Knox to the ceremony as his personal guests.

The day included speeches and presentations by local historians and dignitaries including Capt. Alan Schrader, commanding officer, Naval Base Kitsap, and U.S. Congressman Derek Kilmer of Washington’s 6th congressional district. Kilmer highlighted the event by personally recognizing the Vietnam veterans in attendance, presenting each with a commemorative lapel pin.

In an email to the NAVSUP FLC Puget Sound staff, Knox pointed out that the war touched many.

“Many of us have parents, grandparents, family members, and friends who served during this difficult and controversial period. In fact, some of our very own civilian employees were in uniform during the Vietnam War,” said Knox.

Eight civilian staff members of NAVSUP FLC Puget Sound saw military service during the Vietnam war.

Gary Brundidge, one of the civilian employees who accompanied Capt. Knox at the commemoration and was one of the veterans called on stage to be recognized by Kilmer, was impressed by the event.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the ceremony and the recognition was an added bonus,” said Brundidge.
Brundidge served in the U.S. Navy during the war. After Vietnam, he continued his naval service to retire as a Senior Chief Storekeeper.

National Vietnam War Veterans day is an annual observance recognizing veterans who served during the Vietnam War. On March 28, 2017, President Donald Trump signed the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition act which official recognized March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day.
