BAUMHOLDER, Germany – Soldiers of the 16th Sustainment Brigade participated in a Junior Leader Field Training Exercise led by the Global Threat Mitigation Team of Baumholder, April 1-4. The training provided the junior noncommissioned officers and junior officers the opportunity to conduct Defense Mission Essential Tasks.

“One of the things this training is designed to do is to bring junior leaders and attempt to show them what right looks like, so that they can go back and help their company’s achieve that METL,” said Jim Franks, counter improvised explosive device trainer. “This is because we know that many of the units in the 16th Sustainment Brigade have a lot of detachments supporting efforts all throughout [U.S. Army Europe] 24/7, 365 days a year."

He added that by having a core group of individuals within a company with a little more in depth training, it would assist the company to be more effective and efficient when they go to the field and do the METs that they’re assigned.

The training focused on troop leading procedures, basic field discipline as well as overall coordination of the company defense.

“A lot of people think its just sit in an entry control point and put triple strength concertina,” Franks said. “What we’re trying to show them is that the defense is much more than that. It’s not only those things, but it’s also about managing personnel and time and then getting the resources in place to help properly execute the mission essential tasks.”

One officer, 1st Lt. Adam M. Davis, a personnel parachute packing platoon leader with the 5th Quartermaster Theater Aerial Delivery Company, spoke about what the training offers the junior leaders.

“It’s a great opportunity to come out here and get a good refresher from trained experienced experts on unit base defense, patrolling, field craft and other basic soldier skills,” Davis said. “As leaders out here with officers and NCOs we’re expected to know the basics, so when we do go on those unit FTXs and when we do have those STTs (sergeants time training) concerning base defense, we’ll actually be able to instruct with experience and knowledge, kind of train the trainer idea. This training also gave us the opportunity to work alongside each other and share experience.”
