Soldier hailed as hero in local community

PYEONGTAEK, Republic of Korea – A 2nd Infantry Division/ROK-U.S. Combined Division Soldier was recognized by the Pyeongtaek City mayor for a “brave deed” during a ceremony at City Hall, March 28.
대한민국 평택 – 제2보병사단 / 한미연합사단 장병이 3월 28일 평택 시청에서 시장으로부터 용감한 행동에 대한 표창을 받았다.
Spc. Jonathan Roman Rios, avionics and survivability equipment repairer, B Co., 602nd Aviation Support Battalion, 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade, demonstrated bravery and selfless service when he risked his health to protect two Republic of Korea civilians from an unleashed, aggressive dog in the city, Feb. 19.
제2전투항공여단 602항공지원대대 B중대 소속 항공전자기기 및 생존기구 정비병인 조나단 로만 리오스 상병은 2월 19일 끈 풀린 사나운 개로부터 두 명의 한국 시민을 자신의 몸을 희생하며 구해낸 용감함과 이기심없는 행동을 보였다.
“His brave deed to save citizens in a dangerous situation has unlimitedly moved many citizen’s hearts,” said Pyeongtaek City Mayor Jung, Jang-Seon. “I will put more effort in creating a healthy society where the righteous deed should be respected from now on.”
정장선 평택시장은 “장병이 위험한 상황 속에서 시민을 구한 용감한 행동은 많은 시민들에게 무한한 감동을 주고 있습니다,” 며 “향후 의로운 행동이 존경 받는 건강한 사회를 조성하는데 힘을 기울이겠습니다.” 며 말했다.
The married father of two was walking along the outskirts of town on his way to a friend’s birthday party when he noticed a grandmother and her granddaughter being approached by the animal.
두 자녀의 아버지인 그가 한 할머니와 손녀가 동물로부터 접근을 당하고 있는 모습을 보았을때는 친구의 생일 파티에 가기 위해 한적한 동네를 걷고 있었다.
“All of the sudden a dog got loose and that’s how it started,” said Rios.“There were people on the side walk and there was this little girl with her grandma. I didn’t want the little girl to get bit by this big, white, husky-like dog, so I got in the middle of the situation.”
리오스 상병은 “갑자기 개가 갑자기 풀렸고 그것이 사건의 시작이었습니다,” 며 “인도엔 사람들 몇몇이 있었고 어린 아이가 할머니와 있었습니다. 저는 작은 어린 아이가 그 크고 흰 허스키같이 생긴 개에게 물리는 것을 원치 않았습니다, 그래서 상황에 뛰어 들었습니다.” 고 말했다.
He shouted at the animal, stepping between the civilians and the dog, using his backpack as a barrier when it didn’t retreat.
그는 개가 뒤로 물러서지 않아 그의 가방을 방어막으로 이용하면서 시민들과 개 사이로 걸어가며 그 동물에게 소리쳤습니다.
“Once I saw everyone had left, I said ‘okay this is my time to run’,” said Rios. “I grabbed my backpack and tried to run, but he bit me and held on for a while.”
리오스 상병은 “주변 사람들이 달아난 걸 목격한 후 저는 이제 내가 달아나야할 때구나라고 생각했습니다,” 며 “제가 가방을 집어들고 뛸려고 했는데 그 개가 날 물었고 한동안 물고 있었습니다.” 고 말했다.
Rios was treated at the Troop Medical Clinic at Camp Humphreys and received a series of immunizations as part of his treatment.
리오스 상병은 캠프 험프리스내 군 병원에서 치료를 받았고 그의 치료의 일환으로서 일련의 예방 접종을 받았다.
“Afterwards, I went to the TMC and experienced amazing care,” said Rios. “As soon as I arrived they washed the wound, gave me an antibiotic shot in the thigh, then they gave me five shots every four days.”
리오스 상병은 “그후 저는 병원에 갔고 대단한 치료를 경험했습니다,” 며 “제가 병원에 도착하자 마자 상처 부위를 세척했고 제 허벅지에 항생제를 주사했습니다. 그리고나서 4일마다 5개의 주사를 놓았습니다.” 고 말했다.
Rios said he wouldn’t hesitate to do it again.
리오스 상병은 그런 일이 다시 있다면 주저하지 않을 거라고 말했습니다.
“I really am happy to help them. What can I say I’m a dad,” he said.“If I could do anything for anybody else I would.”
그는 “저는 그 사람들을 도울 수 있어 정말 행복합니다. 제가 아버지라 말할 수 있는 것입니다,” 며 “제가 어떤 다른 사람을 위해 어떠한 것을 할 수 있다면 저는 기꺼이 할 것입니다.” 고 말했다.
Rios’ command leadership also attended the ceremony in his honor.
리오스 상병의 부대 지휘부도 시상식에 축하하기 위해 참석하였다.
“I’m very proud of the Soldier’s actions in the face of danger,” said Col. Brian T. Watkins, 2CAB commander and Seattle, Washington native. “It truly embodies the personal courage we want in all of our Soldiers.
워싱턴주 시애틀 출신이며 2항공여단 여단장인 브라이언 T. 왓킨스 대령은 “위험을 직면한 상황에서 병사가 한 행동에 대해 저는 대단히 자랑스럽습니다,” 며 “이것은 우리의 장병들 모두에게서 우리가 원하는 개인적인 용기를 진정으로 구현하고 있습니다.” 고 말했다.
