    Commander, Navy Recruiting Command

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO – FORT SAM HOUSTON – (March 27, 2019) For Navy Counselor 1st Class Luis Gonzalez of Puerto Rico, the leading petty officer assigned to Navy Recruiting Station (NRS) Round Rock, today was one of the proudest moments of his life.

The day was monumental as Gonzalez, accompanied by his family, witnessed his son, Gabriel Gonzalez-Castro, raise his right hand and take the oath of enlistment into the U.S. Navy at the San Antonio Military Entrance Processing Station.

Gonzalez-Castro, a 2017 graduate of Deltona High School in Deltona, Fla., will become the fourth generation of the Gonzalez family to serve in the armed forces.

According to Gonzalez, his son’s great grandfather served as an infantryman in the U.S. Army during WWII, his grandfather was an Army field artilleryman, and he enlisted as a damage controlman in 1997 serving on USS HARRY S. TRUMAN (CVN-75) and USS GETTYSBURG (CG-64).

“My dad has always set a great example for me to follow,” said Gonzalez-Castro, who withdrew from Austin Community College to join the Navy. “I joined because of him and to serve my country.”

Gonzalez-Castro, who was recruited from NRS Georgetown, will serve in America’s Navy as an aircrewman.

“I wanted to do something that was hands on,” said Gonzalez-Castro, who will ship to Recruit Training Command in April. “I wanted to do something that was cool and travel the world.”

His mother, Yania, beamed with pride as saw her son join the world’s greatest Navy.

“He informed us two weeks ago that he wanted to join the Navy,” said Yania. “I am so full of pride right now. In additional to being a Navy wife, now I’m becoming a Navy mom.”

“He is a squared away kid,” said his father. “He’s a patriot and wants to serve his country. The Navy will be a better service with him in our ranks.”

The Aircrew Program is a six-year enlistment program guaranteeing initial assignment as a flight crewmember in a fixed wing, helicopter or unmanned aerial system squadron.

The program provides for training via various Class "A" Schools for a specific service rating within the Naval Aircrewman (AW) general rating.

Candidates will undergo some of the most demanding physical training offered by the military service in this program.

Navy Recruiting District (NRD) San Antonio’s area of responsibility includes more than 30 Navy Recruiting Stations and Navy Officer Recruiting Stations spread throughout 144,000 square miles of Central and South Texas territory.
