Capt. Laterrious “Tony” Starks was selected in earlier this year to be one of 17 military mentors for the U.S. Senate Youth Program March 2-9.
Starks, assigned to U.S. Army Europe G-1, spent a week in the nation's capital providing leadership support for the delegation of more than 100 high school students who qualified for this year's program.
Since 1962, the U.S. Senate Youth Program has worked to boost students’ understanding of the military, political process and encourage a career in public service.
This year’s program took place March 2-9, and included two students from each state, the District of Columbia and the Department of Defense Education Activity.
According to Starks, the students didn’t just visit tourist locations — they interacted with government official and elected leaders, including President Donald Trump, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Paul Selva, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and several senators.
Each was also awarded a $10,000 college scholarship for undergraduate studies, with encouragement to pursue coursework in history and political science.
The selection process for a military mentor is difficult, explained Starks. The military mentors were with the students around the clock. Acting as guides, counselors, role models and ensuring the students understood protocol and proper behavior.
