APRA HARBOR, GUAM (March 22, 2019) – Sailors assigned to submarine tender USS Emory S. Land (AS 39) participated in a career day at Astumbo Middle School, March 22.
The Sailors spent time in classrooms answering questions from the students and telling them about their jobs in the Navy.
“Before I joined the Navy, I didn’t know about all the careers the Navy actually had to offer,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Amber Shannon, a Sailor who spent time talking to the students. “It’s nice to share what I know now with the kids.”
The Sailors spent the morning with students giving them an inside look at their careers and their contributions to the Navy’s mission.
“A lot of people assume, when we say the military, it’s only about carrying weapons,” said Lt. Wilking Jean, Land’s chaplain. “So we want to describe the different opportunities we have, and the kids can see there is a different future available for them in the military.
Astumbo Middle School is located in Dededo and teaches more than 575 students each year. Career day allows the students an opportunity to explore the many different job specialties in the Navy, as well as other organizations in their community.
“We’re hoping that by going through all these different presenters, they are able to pick up something of interest that they can look forward to after they graduate from high school,” said Rita Flores, Astumbo Middle School principal.
Sailors from Land participate in several community relations events every month in Guam.
Land is one of two Navy submarine tenders that provide maintenance, hotel services and logistical support to submarines and surface ships in the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet areas of operation. The submarines and tenders are maintained as part of the U.S. Navy's forward-deployed submarine force and are readily capable of meeting global operational requirements.
