COLUMBUS, Ohio (March 15, 2019) – The vast sense of honor and pride was highly noticeable in the large ballroom at the Ohio Center of Science and Industry (COSI) as future Sailors, Soldiers, Airmen and Marines confirmed their obligation to serve in the United States military.

The second annual U.S. Armed Forces Career Commitment Celebration, coordinated by the Ohio Department of Education, highlighted the importance of serving and witnessed more than 320 high school students sign their name on the dotted line, 61 of which will be future Sailors.

The event, commonly referred to as “Military Signing Day,” is meant to mimic the fanfare and attention given to star athletes when they sign to attend certain large or popular colleges.

“This is a great event,” said Lt. Lance Noel, Talent Acquisition Onboarding Center Columbus officer in charge. “The sight of all the students swelling with the pride that they are doing something bigger than themselves was a great thing to witness.”

After numerous state, local, military and education leaders made speaking presentations highlighting the need for people to step up, volunteer and take on the challenge of serving, the students signed their pledges and walked the stage for recognition and were congratulated by the various organizational leaders.

“I feel like joining the Navy is going to teach me a lot of things I don’t know,” said Kyra Townsend of Columbus. “I’m very excited to start my journey!”

Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, NRD Ohio’s mission is to man the Navy fleet with the highest quality Sailors and maintain the Navy’s unchallenged worldwide maritime superiority and ability to win wars, deter aggression and maintain freedom of the seas. NRD Ohio operates 56 Navy Recruiting Stations and four Navy Officer Recruiting stations throughout Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia.
