    316th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary)

Camp James A. Garfield, Ohio – U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers from the 316th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) of Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, conducted weapons training in the snow-covered ranges of Camp James A. Garfield, Ohio this weekend.

With a steady easterly gust of 15 miles per hour, Soldiers gripped and steadied their M4 carbines in a wind chill approaching 0 degrees Fahrenheit.

Still, spirits were high as Soldiers relished the opportunity to demonstrate their mettle in the cold environment.

“It’s any climate in any environment to accomplish the mission,” said Spc. Tyrel Smithson, a 27D paralegal specialist, who was quick to acknowledge the training value of weapons training in less than favorable conditions.

Spc. Chris Gregg, a 35F intelligence analyst, agreed. “Doing basic soldier skills is always important,” he said.

Sgt. David Gundich, a 36B financial management technician, was the top shot of the day in the M4 qualification, hitting 40 out of 40.

“I go back and forth between sharpshooter and expert,” said Gundich, adding that simply meeting the standards is not enough: “40 is always the goal.”

Their sentiments are echoed often by Lt. Gen. Charles D. Luckey, Chief of Army Reserve and Commanding General:

“As hard as we are pushing to become more capable, more combat-ready, and more lethal, we cannot afford to walk past or speed past the basics of field-craft, soldiering, and standards and discipline.”
