San Diego, Calif. - Navy Environmental and Preventive Medicine Unit Five (NEPMU-5) kicked off its first leadership training session under the new Sailor 360 curriculum on February 14, 2019.

Sailor 360 is a leadership tool, launched in April 2018, designed to develop Sailors through self-guided and command supported learning environment with an all paygrade inclusive approach. It is a program modeled after previous programs, such as Chief Petty Officer (CPO) 365 Phase 1 and scenario-based studies like Chief’s Mess Training, which allow for commands to be creative and tailor existing source material to best fit their needs. As stated in “Laying the Keel: Developing the Backbone of Our Navy”, Sailor 360 sets the foundation for a series of formal courses to continue throughout one’s career. Courses are short duration, high impact, adult learning experiences, focusing on character, ethics, leadership, profession of arms, self-awareness and decision making, facilitated by trained and certified senior enlisted leaders.

“Sailor 360 is an opportunity for me to learn and grow as a person while helping others do the same,” said Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Tyellis Greenprice, NEPMU-5 staff. “This is a type of training that people need to believe in or else it will not work. I believe learning based on teamwork, drills and ceremonies, Navy core values and heritage will help Sailors become better leaders. Participating in this program can be one of the most inspirational experiences in our military career as long as we continue to work, learn and grow together as a team.”

NEPMU-5 Sailors from all ranks were given the opportunity to introduce themselves and provide feedback on what they want to gain from the training. The group discussion gave senior leadership insight on the participants’ varying experiences as well as expectations and needs, all of which are vital to the overall success and effectiveness of the program.

"I am here to learn from other perspectives,” said Lt. Elizabeth Gerardo, NEPMU-5 Entomologist. “Having different views allows us to solve problems more efficiently and effectively."
“Sailor 360 is important to me because it's an opportunity to train the future leaders of the Navy on fundamentals based on the needs of the Sailors at our command;” said Chief Hospital Corpsman Adriane Dowden. “This is also an opportunity for all Sailors regardless of rank to give their valuable input on topics that are atypical from the standard lesson plans.”

NEPMU-5 has demonstrated its steadfast commitment to supporting and developing professional and leadership skills through education and training opportunities, as well as team building activities that contribute to the overall unit mission.
“As our Navy continues to face more challenging and complex situations, the need to develop strong leaders within the organization is evident,” said Capt. Peter Obenauer, officer in charge, NEPMU-5. “Sailor 360 provides a pathway to empower our future leaders and creates an opportunity to emphasize the concept of teamwork. Unlike other leadership training courses, Sailor 360 focuses on an all hands on deck approach creating a sense of command ownership and provides a more positive impact for all participants. I am very excited to be a part of this program that develops and strengthens our Sailors to be effective future leaders.”
