VILSECK, Germany - The Regimental Support Squadron, 2d Cavalry Regiment based out of Vilseck, Germany, executed convoy protection platform training during their convoy operations gunnery in the Grafenwoehr Training Area, Grafenwoehr, Germany, Feb. 4 - 8, 2019. Seventeen gunnery crews moved to Range 204 in the Grafenwoehr Training Area to conduct the qualification.

To prepare the crews, RSS master gunners utilized the month prior to teach convoy protection principles. Training began with classroom instruction, followed by a gunnery skills test, vehicle and ammo identifications and a weapons proficiency exam. Before their movement to the range, the crews also completed a Reconfigurable Vehicle Tactical Trainer simulation to familiarize themselves with maneuvering the terrain.

The gunnery consisted of two tables - a practice run and a live fire. The crews qualified in both day and nighttime iterations, with the daytime iteration consisting of six separate engagements and the nighttime iteration consisting of four.

“Gunnery was tough, but we were all motivated to have some friendly competition that also implemented training,” said Sgt. Brandon Williams, vehicle commander, Bravo Troop, RSS, 2CR.

The crews endured unpredictable weather to execute day and night engagements but were able to conclude the week with a considerable morale boost when Alpha Troop leadership purchased pancake mix for the Soldiers to cook on the final day of gunnery.

“After a whole week of harsh weather and long hours of training, it was nice to see everyone come together over a homemade breakfast,” said Sgt. Jessica Webb, gunner, Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, RSS, 2CR.

The top performing crew at the gunnery comprised of Sgt. Bekoe Prince, Spc. David Hostetler and Pvt. Chance Ernest, all belonging to Bravo Troop. These Soldiers were awarded Army Achievement Medals for their gunnery performance.

RSS’s gunnery progression will continue in May with convoy escort team live fires and will culminate in troop-level convoy live fire and base defense operations later this year.
