Base defense is a constantly evolving mission. With the introduction of new threats, technologies, and ever-changing policies, this job grows harder day by day.

During the COPE NORTH 2019 Security forces field training exercise, the U.S. Air Force, Royal Australian Air Force, and Japan Air Self-Defense Force worked together to remain ahead of the curve in this field.

“We’re going through COPE NORTH 19,” said Master Sgt. Che Bain, 736th Security Forces Squadron operations superintendent. “This is something we do throughout the year with our foreign partners. We have defenders from the Australian and Japanese air forces and we are working together to defend a simulated base.”

The multilateral field application helped these nations enhance tactics, techniques, and procedures to work together in future operations.

“This training was dedicated to multilateral integration,” said Capt. Samuel Doyel, the 736th Security Forces Squadron officer in-charge for Commando Warrior. “We have about 65 total defenders from the United States, Australia and Japan. These defenders being able to work together is key to security in the Indo-Pacific Region.”

Beginning in 1978, COPE NORTH takes place in one of the most diverse areas of the Indo-Pacific theater making interoperability between countries critical to ensure region stability.

“With the way we’re constructed, we will be teamed up with other nations,” said Bain. “We want to know what their tactics are as well as them know ours for future operations so we are in sync with one another’s capabilities.”

This exercise tested the ability of three nations to set up a defense plan and maintain security at a forward operating base foreign to them.

“The main goal of this is increase confidence in multilateral operations,” said Doyel. “We never know when we are going to need to use these skills in a real world scenario, this makes getting to know the way each other operates vital.”
