FLEET ACTIVITIES YOKOSUKA, Japan -- An Edgewood, Maryland native and Commander, Submarine Group 7’s (CSG 7) Sailor of the year is currently serving in Yokosuka, Japan.
Electronics Technician 1st Class Rex Sapasap joined the Navy in 2004. Navy electronics technicians are an exclusive group of professionals specially trained in electrical engineering, computer and aerospace. They help operate and manage the electronics systems and subsystems of the world’s most advanced ships and aircraft – as well as on bases ashore.
At CSG 7, Sapasap is currently serving as the command’s career counselor (CCC). The CCC is responsible for managing the Navy Enlisted Retention and Career Development Program within the command.
“I like my job because it’s a change of pace from what my job has been during previous tours, and I get opportunities every day to help Sailors in the command grow both personally and professionally,” said Sapasap.
Helping and leading Sailors is what he does best, according to Chief Electronics Technician (Radio) Aaron Gale.
“This man is the future,” said Gale. “The amount of impact he has on this command is incredible. His personal accomplishments speak for themselves, but even more so is his humility and selflessness. From being the command’s career counselor, departmental leading petty officer, to rec committee president, he dedicates so much to his Sailors and still has time to go home and take care of his family. He sets a great example for everyone else.”
Sapasap credits his success to the support of his wife, parents and brother, as well as the mentorship of past chief petty officers and leading petty officers, and he is putting effort into paying it forward to the Sailors he now leads.
“My legacy isn’t always going to be about personal accomplishments, but what exactly I leave behind,” said Sapasap. “The Sailors that take my place and their success is my legacy. Can I be a good mentor or set the right example? These are things that drive me both in and out of uniform.”
With more than 50 percent of the world’s shipping tonnage and a third of the world’s crude oil passing through the Indo Pacific region, the U.S. has historic and enduring interests in this part of the world. CSG 7 is responsible for coordinating a diverse fleet of submarines, surface ships and aircraft deployed to the Western Pacific and the Middle East; two forward-deployed submarine tenders and four attack submarines homeported in Guam; Submarine Squadron 21 in Bahrain; five surveillance towed array sensor system vessels and three oceanographic survey vessels when tasked for Theater Anti-Submarine Warfare operations. Under CSG 7 are two task forces: CTF-74 and CTF-54, which provide theater anti-submarine warfare support from the Red Sea to the International Date Line.
