Captain Nicole Nicol, the officer in charge of emergency resuscitation at the 179th Airlift Wing Medical Group specializes in hematology and oncology (blood cancer related) as a nurse in the civilian world. After graduating from the Ohio State University in 2007, she now works at the James Cancer Hospital.
At the wing, Nicol manages instructors of the CPR program, making sure all personnel on base are trained to respond to emergency situations and everyone stays current in their training. She takes this responsibility very seriously, as medical professionals need to stay up to date to stay efficient.
Nicol joined the Ohio Air National Guard before becoming a nurse. She took full advantage of the full tuition assistance and technical training that the Air Guard offers. She first enlisted as a medical technician which gave here all the hands on training she needed that later helped build the foundation of her nursing career. ,As the end of her first enlistment neared, she decided to stay in.
“It was a lot of fun and there were tons of opportunities to travel and do really exciting things within the medical group,” Nicol stated.
She worked her way up into an officer position and is excited for her military future. What has kept her motivated throughout her military career is people.
“There are so many professionals here that I’ve become really close with and they become like your family” Nicol said.
She benefits from going on trips, working alongside other specialists; learning so many new techniques and information about different medicines. She is proud of all the hard working women in positions such as nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and doctors.
Nicol has been able to use her experiences and knowledge she has gained from her trips and working alongside other specialists to aid those in need through humanitarian missions.
Nicol has been able to operate in two humanitarian missions in her career. The first was a dental mission in Belize, providing basic dental healthcare to locals suffering from tooth decay and oral diseases. Nicole’s second humanitarian mission was to a Native American Reservation in California, providing general healthcare to individuals that otherwise would not have that access to a trained team of medical professionals.
“It was a unique experience learning different things about different cultures and being able to help them medically,” Nicol said.
Although Nicol traveled to so many different destinations and worked with so many different diverse peoples, she takes pride in being a caretaker on the homefront as a mother. She knows she is a vital part of her family, and understands the importance of maintaining the health of people she cares about. Nicol values balance, being able to take time for herself, taking care of herself and making sure she is able to take care of her family.
