OMAHA, Neb. -- The .S. Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District’s very own Askelon Parker received the Modern Day Technology Leader award Feb. 8 at the 2019 Black Engineer of the Year Award Science Technology Engineering Mathematics Global Competitiveness Conference in Washington, D.C.

Parker is a registered architect whose ability and professional accomplishments led to him being nominated by his supervisor Bernard Gorup, Omaha District’s Chief of Architectural and Interior Design Section.

“Mr. Askelon Parker has worked extremely hard to achieve the successes that he has realized. Those successes are directly attributable to his work ethic, commitment to his profession and devotion to the Corps of Engineers,” Gorup said. “As a result of Askelon’s talents, nominating him for the professional achievement BEYA STEM 2018, in the modern day technology leader category was an easy decision without question.”

Gorup’s effusive remarks were echoed by Omaha District’s Commander Col. John Hudson.

“Mr. Parker’s contributions have played a significant role to the overall mission and success of the United States Army Corps of Engineers,” Hudson said. “Mr. Parker is not only a wonderful role model himself, but has shown a great passion for teaching and mentoring others; always from a foundation of history and personal experiences, and always with an eye toward improving communication and building bridges.”

While Parker’s nomination may have originated in Omaha District, his accomplishments did not go unnoticed by other USACE leaders. Lt. Gen. Todd T. Semonite, 54th Chief of Engineers and USACE Commanding General, was eager to grant his endorsement to Parker’s nomination.

“Mr. Parker is a humble professional who seeks to do this best in providing excellent service so that both USACE our stakeholders successfully complete the mission,” Semonite said. “Mr. Parker’s selfless service and dedication to the Corps mission make him an invaluable part of the USACE team.”

Parker, who has been with USACE for 14 years, had not been nominated previously, but is proud that his contributions to the Omaha District were recognized.
“Winning BEYA affirms that my work is appreciated and that my professional interactions are productive,” Parker said.

Parker recognizes his hard work got him to this point in his career, but he is grateful for the help his peers provided along the way.

“It’s important to acknowledge those who have supported me. Receiving this award pays homage to those who invested their time in my development because we don’t do this by ourselves,” Parker said.

Parker also has some advice for those aspiring to follow in his footsteps.

“Remember to maintain a healthy outlook and stand firm when confronted by people who don’t believe in what you’re doing. When presented with an opportunity that aligns with your goals, be sure to take it.”
