CAMP COURTNEY, OKINAWA, Japan - Local Okinawan residents gathered along the shore of the Camp Courtney beach to participate in the annual Hijiki Harvest Festival Feb. 18.
Hijiki is an edible seaweed which grows in abundance along the beach. The festival allows residents to gather the seaweed which is scarce in the rest of Okinawa.
“We collect Hijiki for our family restaurant,” explains Mia Sterlings, an Uruma City resident as she eagerly helped her elderly grandparents in the crashing waves. “It is always so much fun!”
About 50 members of the community gathered along the beach to harvest, all for different reasons.
Stacy Cosgrove, a Status of Forces Agreement member who lives on Camp Courtney stated her reasoning for coming out is purely for the experience. “It’s a lot harder than it looks, everyone here is very committed, and I love being part of it.”
After being cleaned and sundried, Hijiki can be eaten and used in various Japanese dishes. It is abundant in dietary fiber, essential minerals and is said to be the key to health and beauty.
