Fort McCoy Garrison Commander Col. Hui Chae Kim talked about the previous year’s accomplishments and the goals for the current year at the annual workforce briefing Jan. 23 in building 905.

Some of the highlighted accomplishments of 2018 included winning a Silver Award in the 2018 Army Communities of Excellence competition, the Directorate of Emergency Services’ community support during the flooding in surrounding areas in September, and earning a positive rating in Installation Management Command’s Higher Headquarters Assessment.

“We are doing great things all the time,” Kim said. “We are continuing to improve Fort McCoy.”

The garrison supported 148,733 personnel training in fiscal year 2018, its third highest total all time, hosting exercises such as Operation Cold Steel II, Operation Ullr, and multiple Combat Support Training Exercises. In addition, Fort McCoy began running the Cold-Weather Operations Course and supported weekend, annual, and additional training for service members, interagency, and multinational forces.

“Think about 150,000 Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, (and) Airmen coming through Fort McCoy. … And it’s all of you who had a part in supporting them to build readiness,” Kim said.

Kim also praised the installation’s five-year strategic business plan, which helps guide Fort McCoy’s planning and development. According to the plan, Fort McCoy’s vision is “to be the premier total force training center and power projection installation for America’s defense forces.

“This is why we do great things at Fort McCoy, and every other garrison is jealous of us,” Kim said.

Training will continue at a high rate throughout 2019, with two Combat Support Training Exercises, Global Medic, and Red Dragon among those scheduled in the upcoming months, in addition to weekend and extended-combat training.

Kim asked for everyone’s cooperation when renovations to the main gate begin later this year. Construction is scheduled to begin in March, and alternate traffic plans are being prepared to alleviate congestion while the main gate is closed.

“There’s going to be some challenges starting in March. … I need everybody’s help to try to be patient while we work on the main gate,” Kim said.

Kim said Fort McCoy will also continue to engage with the surrounding communities with activities such as the annual Armed Forces Day Open House, National Night Out, Memorial and Veterans Day celebrations, and mutual aid agreements.

“As you go out to other installations, as you meet and engage with other leaders and Soldiers, promote Fort McCoy,” Kim said.

Located in the heart of the upper Midwest, Fort McCoy is the only U.S. Army installation in Wisconsin. The installation has provided support and facilities for the field and classroom training of more than 100,000 military personnel from all services each year since 1984.
