It is only fitting to start off the year of fitness with a project that took 10 months and $5.3 million dollars with a ribbon cutting ceremony for the upgraded Harris Fitness Center Feb. 1, 2019.

The 9th Force Support Squadron closed the HFC in June 2018 to make several modifications and revitalize the bases main fitness facility. According to Capt. Jonathan Davis, 9th FSS project manager, the new facility will have something for everybody.

“We’re really excited to open it, the most exciting part about this is that every piece of equipment is brand new and completely custom for this facility,” Davis said. ”We are looking towards the future to get everyone in here, we are bringing new things to Beale that have never been here.”

To accommodate the upgraded equipment, a 2,839 square feet space expansion will provide users with a new basketball court, bleachers, and added concessions stands. They also added a smoothie bar that will be operational soon, improved hallways and enhanced cardio rooms. On the second floor, an improved weight room including 100 new pieces of equipment that are available for use.

“I was here from start to finish doing weekly walkthroughs with the contractors,” Davis said.

An additional overhaul was completed on the electrical systems, lighting and HVAC system that grew from 24 tons to 114 tons per square foot. To ensure all patrons’ needs are met, the new locker rooms were outfitted with new Americans with Disabilities Act approved showers.

Davis mentioned that the center will also feature new classes for mothers just getting back from maternity leave to stay physically fit. That will be one of many new classes that will be available.

As visitors walked around the new facility after the ribbon cutting, Airmen from the 9th FSS HFC staff showed them how to operate some of the new equipment, along with answering any questions about the upgrade.
