Sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) enjoyed a steel beach picnic on the ship’s flight deck while underway, Jan. 27.
A steel beach picnic is an event held on the flight deck where Sailors can enjoy grilled food and participate in games and fitness events to boost morale at sea.
John C. Stennis’ First Class Petty Officer’s Association helped serve food, restock tables with supplies, and made sure lines were organized efficiently.
“I enjoyed being a part of something that let me help other people from around the ship,” said Legalman 1st Class Joshua Boga, from Dayton, Nevada. “Morale around the command fluctuates and events like [steel beach picnics] help lift everyone’s spirits.”
Sailors across many rates and ranks ensured the day’s festivities transpired smoothly.
“It’s nice to see everyone having a good time, laughing, and being able to take a break,” said Lt. Cmdr. Sarah Smith, the John C. Stennis’ reactor training assistant, from Warren, Ohio, who volunteered by grilling during the event. “I think it’s a good opportunity for the crew to interact because this event gives us the opportunity to get out of the ship and have a good time.”
Sailors on their first deployment got the opportunity to experience a break by eating and enjoying the sun with friends.
“This is my first steel beach picnic and I expected that most people would just grab food and leave,” said Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Apprentice Sandy Reyes, from Glendale, Arizona. “That’s what I was going to do, but then I started talking to friends and enjoying myself. I like that there were games and activities on the flight deck in the sun. I work nights, so I don’t get to see the sun often, it’s nice to be able to come up here and enjoy it.”
Although steel beach picnics only last a few hours, Sailors can carry a refreshed attitude and reaffirmed sense of camaraderie into the upcoming work weeks.The John C. Stennis is deployed to the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations in support of security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
