Retired Command Sgt. Maj. Rufus Parker of La Crosse, Wis., gives his presentation as guest speaker during the Fort McCoy observance of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday Jan. 15, 2019, at McCoy's Community Center at Fort McCoy, Wis.

Parker currently serves as a pastor at Calvary Apostolic Church in La Crosse.

Parker is also the author of six books: “Developing the Man in the Mirror”; “A Reflection of the Man in the Mirror”; “If God Be for Us, Who Can Be Against Us?”; “According to the Pattern”; “Today’s Morsel”; and “Building Blocks to Manhood.”

The holiday honoring King’s birthday, celebrated the third Monday of January, is a designated national day of service.

The recurring theme is “Remember! Celebrate! Act! A day on, not a day off!”

Located in the heart of the upper Midwest, Fort McCoy is the only U.S. Army installation in Wisconsin. The installation has provided support and facilities for the field and classroom training of more than 100,000 military personnel from all services each year since 1984.
