“I came here to support the battalion, support my company and to show a good face,” said Florida National Guard Pfc. Christian Alderman, a combat engineer from 870th Engineer (Sapper) Company in Crestview, Florida.

“I definitely had the state of mind and gave it my all today.”

Alderman is now representing the 83rd Troop Command as the Best Warrior Soldier 2019, as well as Florida National Guard Sgt. Trace Richter, a combat engineer from the 870th Engineer (Sapper) Company in Crestview, Florida, who is now titled as the Best Warrior Noncommissioned Officer 2019.

“I’m looking to see how my body operates in the worst condition,” said Richter prior to the competition, as he was battling off a cold. “Because then I’ll know that if I did it at my worst, I will be fine at the state level.”

Richter and Alderman were hand selected by leadership out of roughly 60 people in their unit to participate.

The competition took place Jan. 26-27 at Camp Blanding Joint Training Center, Florida. The weekend kicked off with a 10 mile ruck march before the sun could even rise.

“When I was rucking alone, I imagined someone behind me on my heels,” said Alderman. “I tried to get it to where I cannot see the trail vehicle when I looked back.”

Candidates were evaluated and scored on the 10 mile ruck march, individual weapons qualification, Army warrior tasks (land navigation, communication, Nuclear-biological-chemical, individual weapons), a general knowledge test, Army physical fitness test (APFT) and personal appearance to the board members who selected the winning noncommissioned officer and soldier.

The competition ended with a cold, damp morning before dawn as the soldiers persevered through the Army physical fitness test and then later stood before board members for their last portion of the competition, after completing a 10 mile ruck march and warrior tasks and battle drills the day prior.

Richter and Alderman were the only two soldiers from the 83rd Troop Cmd. to compete in the Best Warrior Competition this year and were awarded with the Florida Commendation Medal by Florida National Guard Col. Vaugn Brown, commander of the 83rd Troop Cmd. for their actions in the competition. They will continue onto the state level in March 2019.

The 83rd Troop Cmd. is looking forward to watching these Soldiers shine at state level as they continue to work hard and prepare for the tasks ahead.
