    Naval Medical Center - Portsmouth

Naval Medical Center Portsmouth’s (NMCP) Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) hosted an open house during National CRNA Week on Jan. 25.

The open house included a presentation on the CRNA Program and some hands-on training with simulation mannequins.

“There are a lot of people who think that they are interested in being a CRNA but may not know exactly what the job entails or what is necessary to apply for the program,” said Lt. Cmdr. Reginald Middlebrooks, an NMCP nurse anesthetist. “Today was to give them a basic overview of it, and to allow them to interact with people that are actually going through the program.”

NMCP’s CRNAs provide approximately 5,500 anesthetic procedures annually. They provide anesthetic care in the main operating room, in labor and delivery, and in other locations throughout the medical center.

“For the Navy CRNA Program, we have to hire from within, so in order to be a Navy CRNA you have to be a Navy nurse to begin with,” Middlebrooks said. “There is a lot of criteria, a lot of qualifications that you have to have, and we don’t often get enough qualified applicants so this is a little bit of a recruiting tool too.”

According the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) Instruction 6550.7A, the mission of Navy Medicine requires the utilization of the CRNA in operational and isolated settings not found in the civilian sector. The CRNA must be able to function without hesitation in that environment at a moment’s notice.

Nurse anesthetists were one of the first anesthesia providers and have been providing anesthesia care to patients in the United States for more than 150 years. CRNAs safely administer approximately 43 million anesthetics to patients each year in the United States (AANA 2017 Member profile survey). They are the sole anesthesia providers in almost all rural hospitals, and have served in every major conflict since the American Civil War. They have been the main provider of anesthesia for the men and women of the U.S. military since WWI on the ground and afloat.

As the U.S. Navy's oldest, continuously-operating hospital since 1830, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth proudly serves past and present military members and their families. The national acclaimed, state of the art medical center, along with the area's ten branch and TRICARE Prime Clinics in the Hampton Roads area. The medical center also supports premier research and teaching programs designed to prepare new doctors, nurses and hospital corpsman for future roles in healing and wellness.
