KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. – Kirtland highlighted career opportunities available on base to a group of Albuquerque Public Schools counselors during a ”Show and Tell” event here, Jan. 18, 2019.
The event provided a unique opportunity to the counselors, as career opportunities to serve in the military or as a Department of Defense civilian are often overlooked.
“The intent of the event was to bring our Albuquerque Public School counselors on to the installation, and educate them on what goes on beyond the fence line, and the career, job and intern opportunities available to the students of New Mexico,” said Cindy Dominguez-Trujillo, special assistant to the commander on diversity and affirmative employment programs.
Kirtland is a major employment hub for Albuquerque, providing jobs for over 23,000 people.
“We are hoping that the career counselors will go back and share this information with their students, so they can begin to prepare and take the correct coursework and aspire to work at Kirtland Air Force Base,” said Dominguez-Trujillo.
The event included discussions on the internships available here, and concluded with a chance for the counselors to meet and speak with base employees about their careers.
“I’m definitely going to use this information when working with students interested in military careers,” said Tim Huggins, Rio Grande High School college and career readiness counselor. “There are options for them to serve as civilians, enlisted or officers. There are lots of opportunities for them to become employed and have careers here.”
There are plans for similar visits in the future, including a tour for kids to educate them on the base and opportunities here.
“I think our community is really starting to become interested and aware of what goes on at Kirtland Air Force Base,” said Dominguez-Trujillo.
