Work continues on a $555,000 storage building on the Fort McCoy cantonment area that will be used for salt and sand storage for roads and grounds maintenance at the installation.

“This is a second salt/sand storage facility, which will be very similar to the existing adjacent facility,” said Construction Inspection Branch Chief Dan Hanson with the Directorate of Public Works (DPW).

Platt Construction of Tomah, Wis., has the contract to complete the facility, Hanson said.

The scope of work for the project shows the building will primarily be of wood construction and will be approximately 70 feet wide by 88 feet deep.

The new facility will be capable of storing 2,000 tons of salt and 2,000 tons of sand with a partition between the two products. The facility is designed to prevent direct contact of the salt with precipitation or with run-off from rain or ice and snow melt, Hanson said.

When the facility is filled with salt and sand, trucks with end-dump trailers will fill it, Hanson said. The building’s interior floor is constructed of compacted asphalt.

Also, the building will have two entrances built at a minimum height of 30 feet with protective bollards. The building also will have interior lighting and an exhaust fan.

Construction inspection representatives with DPW are monitoring this project until its completion.

The facility will be completed later in 2019.

Construction projects like this also align with Fort McCoy’s strategic objectives that are part of the installation’s five-year Strategic Business Plan. Specifically, the objective to sustain and modernize Fort McCoy’s cantonment, range complex, strategic mobility, physical security, quality of life, and information technology infrastructure is addressed with this project.

Located in the heart of the upper Midwest, Fort McCoy is the only U.S. Army installation in Wisconsin. The installation has provided support and facilities for the field and classroom training of more than 100,000 military personnel from all services each year since 1984.
