Members of the local and military communities gathered for a ribbon cutting ceremony Jan. 16 at Ie Shima Training Facility’s Landing Helicopter Dock training site.
The ceremony was held to commemorate the completion of the LHD training site.
“The success of this project is attributed to the strong partnership of Marine Corps Installations Pacific, the professional and timely work of NIPPO construction and the support of the Okinawa prefecture and Japanese Governments,” said Army Lt. Col. Daniel A. Segura, deputy commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Japan District.
The two-and-a half-year project consisted of laying high temperature concrete, fiber concrete pavement, and asphalt. NIPPO, along with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Japan District, and the GF Public Works Branch, completed the 1.1 million square-foot installation.
“Through these efforts we now have the ability to train to a higher standard, with our newest equipment, to increase the Marine Corps’ contribution to security throughout the Indo-Pacific region,” said Brig. Gen. Paul Rock Jr. the commanding general of Marine Corps Installations Pacific and Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. Butler, Japan. “I could not be more pleased and proud to be able to have turned this facility over and to see it’s already doing its job.”
