AUSTIN, Texas - Maj. Gen. Tracy R. Norris took command of the Texas Military Department during a change of command ceremony at Camp Mabry, Jan. 12, 2019.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott appointed Norris as the new Texas Adjutant General after Maj. Gen. John F. Nichols announced his retirement in November.

In front of a crowd of family, friends, distinguished military guests, the Texas Secretary of State, David Whitley and U.S. Secretary of Energy and former Texas Governor, Rick Perry, Nichols reflected on his service as the TAG.

“Thank you to all members of the Texas Military Department. We’ve had some hard times and some wonderful times,” said Nichols. “We’ve answered the call of Texas and the nation and have went above and beyond every time.”

Nichols said during one of Texas’ most troubling challenges, Hurricane Harvey, the Texas Military Department went above and beyond the call of duty to help the citizens of Texas in their time of need.

Planning for and responding to large-scale natural disasters, training and equipping Texas Military forces and working alongside local authorities are but a few responsibilities Nichols passed down to the newly appointed TAG.

In a traditional exchange of command Norris took charge of her role as the commander of the Texas Military Department.

“I am honored by Gov. Abbott’s appointment and thank him for trusting me to lead the Texas Military Department,” said Norris. “Maj. Gen. Nichols has done great succession planning and I look forward to building on his superb leadership keeping Texas Guardsmen ready and resilient in our ever-changing profession and ensuring they are prepared to face any challenge at home or abroad.”

Norris, the first female appointed to Texas Adjutant General, began her military career in 1986 after commissioning from Florida State University’s ROTC program. She also received a Master of Science in Urban and Regional Planning, Master of Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College and a Master of Business Administration from The University of Texas at Austin and has held notable positions to include Deputy Adjutant General for Army, Commander of the Texas Army National Guard and Commander of 176th Engineer Brigade.

Norris’ new command includes the Office of the Executive Director, the Texas Army National Guard, the Texas Air National Guard and the Texas State Guard.

“At the Texas Military Department, we are Texans serving Texas,” said Norris. “I am proud to lead the more than 24,000 men and women who work tirelessly to keep our state and our nation safe.”
