Georgia Army National Guardsman, Pfc. James M. Crisp, an infantryman assigned to the Cumming-based, Alpha Company, 3rd Battalion, 121st Infantry Regiment, along with 150 residents became United States citizens during a ceremony at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services building in Atlanta, Ga., on Jan. 11, 2019.

Crisp is a former United Kingdom citizen attending the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega with the Corps of Cadets and upon graduation, will commission as a 2nd Lt. in the Georgia Army National Guard.

“I think it is a great honor to become a citizen of the United States,” said Crisp. “I have been in the United States for 14 years now and it raised me.”

Crisp came to the U.S. with his father, Adrian, in 2004 when he was six. Adrian became a naturalized citizen in 2017.

Crisp worked over the last 2 ½ years to obtain his citizenship. When his father became a citizen, he was just one month past his 18th birthday and was no longer qualified as a child of a U.S. citizen. Upon enlisting in the National Guard in February 2017, he could not achieve the minimum active-duty time required to qualify through military service. He started the naturalization process approximately a year ago and upon successful completion of the USCIS Naturalization exam earned his citizenship.

“We are extremely proud of Cadet Crisp,” said Capt. Elijah J. Carroll, University of North Georgia Cadet Liaison Officer, Georgia Army National Guard Recruiting and Retention Battalion. “To take this additional challenge along with his current commitments to the school speaks highly of him.”

Crisp is a graduate of Alpharetta High School and is attending UNG on the Georgia Military Scholarship, which pays for all expenses associated while attending. He is currently majoring in history and upon commissioning, plans to become an infantry platoon leader.

“I am looking forward to serving in the U.S. Army as an American now,” said Crisp.
