Did you know that most states offer special services and benefits to veterans? While veterans have access to benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and other federal agencies, veterans may not be aware of the benefits states have made available to them locally. These state services and benefits are in addition to those from federal agencies.

State benefits can range from educational grants, to employment resources, to free hunting and fishing licenses.

Examples of other state benefits and services include:

    • Special exemptions or discounts on fees and taxes
    • Employment counseling and assistance
    • Home loans
    • Veteran's homes

Each state manages its own program through a state (or county) director of veteran’s affairs. Details and benefits vary by state and/or counties.

For example, the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) recently announced some best practices for transitioning service members and veterans, including registering with DMVA and safeguarding military paperwork. By registering with DMVA, transitioning service members, veterans, family members of veterans and those who work with veterans receive helpful information about programs, benefits and services specific to Pennsylvania residents.

The Department of Veterans Affairs maintains links to State Departments of Veterans Affairs offices. Visit https://www.va.gov/statedva.htm to see what’s available to you in your state.
