POZNAN, Poland -- The masses gathered throughout Poznan, January 5, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Greater Poland Uprising and to honor the Polish Air Operations Mobile Command Element.

Poland was restored after Wielkopolska insurgents captured the Lawica airport from the German Army during World War I that sparked the Greater Poland Uprising.
Several re-enactments were presented throughout Poznan for the 100th anniversary of the uprising. However, at the Wolności Square in Poznan, the highlight was on the handing of the banner award ceremony for the Air Operations Mobile Command Element based in Babkach, Poland.

Several distinguished guests were in attendance to include, Mariusz Błaszczak, Polish Minister of National Defense; professor Cezary Kowalski, advisor to the president; Gov. Zbigniew Hoffmann of the Wielkopolska Voivodship province; Magdalena Sochyllo, godmother of Air Operations Mobile Command Element colors; professor Jan Węglarz, godfather of Air Operations Mobile Command Element colors; Col. Mirosław Nawrocki, Commander of the Air Operations Mobile Command Element; and U. S. Army senior leaders from the Headquarters, Mission Command Element (Provisional) in Poznan.
Col. Patrick R. Michaelis, commander for Headquarters, Mission Command Element (Provisional), and Col. Brian Olsen, chief of staff for Headquarters, Mission Command Element (Provisional) attended the ceremony as honored guests.

The Headquarters is located in Poznan and the Soldiers deployed there work alongside the Polish military in a combined effort in support of Atlantic Resolve.

The ceremony opened with the Polish military band’s call to attention and posting of the Polish National colors. Following the Polish Minister of National Defense’s remarks, the godmother of Air Operations Mobile Command Element colors, and professor Jan Węglarz, the godfather of Air Operations Mobile Command Element colors, were presented to the audience gathered in the Wolności Square.
The Polish Minister of National Defense, advisor to the president, and the godparents of the colors took turns nailing in pins to the banner and signed the act granting the banner to the Air Operations Mobile Command Element.

Following Polish Military tradition, the banner was presented to the Polish Minister of National Defense, then passed to the commander of the Polish Mobile Air Operations Command Element, and finally, to the commander who placed it in the hands of his subordinate commander symbolizing command responsibility and authority from the commander of the Polish Mobile Air Operations Command Element.

“It was a great ceremony and a testament of the history of Poland,” said Michaelis. “It was a pleasure that we could be a part of this ceremony and show our collaboration with our NATO partners.”
