    48th Fighter Wing

A Liberty Wing Airman received the U.S. Air Force’s most prestigious fighter pilot award here, Dec. 11.

Maj. Eric Joachim, 48th Operations Support Squadron chief of wing weapons and tactics and F-15 Eagle pilot, earned the Lt. Col. Anthony C. Shine Award by distinguishing himself through his exceptional flying abilities, superior leadership and dedication to his community.

“I am very flattered to receive this award,” said Joachim. “But I see it more so as a reflection of the people that I work with on a daily basis. Thank you for being my wingman.”

Colleen Shine, daughter of Lt. Col. Shine, and Gen. Tod D. Wolters, United States Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa commander, traveled to RAF Lakenheath to present Joachim with the award.

“We’re here to recognize the best fighter pilot of 2017,” said Wolters during the presentation. “I feel so comforted to know that this year’s Anthony C. Shine Award winner is Eric “Slayer” Joachim. What a perfect fit. Congratulations my friend. We are very proud of you.”

Named for Lt. Col. Anthony Shine who went missing in action in 1972, the annual award is presented to the pilot that most exemplified Shine’s best characteristics: outstanding flying ability, top-notch leadership and unwavering devotion to community.

“The award honors not only exceptional pilots but also exceptional people,” said Shine. “[Maj. Joachim’s] outstanding service in flying, teaching and leading is a reminder of all that is right about today’s Air Force. [He is] a sterling example of the caliber of character and excellence in flying my father stood for.”
