MARINE CORPS RECRUIT DEPOT PARRIS ISLAND, S.C.—Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island held a ceremony to debut the newest known-distance range in the Marine Corps Dec. 18, 2018.

Brig. Gen. James Glynn, the commanding general of Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island and Eastern Recruiting Region, christened the Inchon Rifle Range by firing the ceremonial first shot, marking the end of a two-year construction project.

The 50-lane firing range was completely demolished in 2016 due to deteriorating facilities that were causing environmental issues. The range was rebuilt which included a new impact berm, side safety berm and newly paved firing lines, roads, storm water collection and management systems.

According to range staff, the new construction should allow more time for recruits to prefect marksmanship.

“When recruits are on the range and focusing on marksmanship, we want them to be comfortable,” said Col. Randall Hoffman, the commanding officer of Weapons Training Battalion. “This range is going to improve a lot of our qualification procedures, allowing us to spend more time focusing on recruit marksmanship skills.”

MCRD Parris Island graduates approximately 20,000 Marines each year. Marksmanship is a perishable skill that each recruit must master before graduating. Each range on Parris Island is supervised by roughly 40 Marines who have completed a demanding course of marksmanship instruction to provide the highest caliber of weapons training in the world.

MCRD Parris Island has future range construction projects in place, including the reconstruction of Hue City range in the coming months.
