I came back about two weeks after the storm hit. Hearing how the devastation actually was is a lot different than actually seeing it. Seeing it was very overwhelming in a sense but it was also encouraging. It was encouraging in the sense that we went from complete devastation to now seeing roadways cleared, debris cleaned up and trees hauled away. To be able to come back here full time is an eye-opening experience and it’s great to be a part of something like this.
Our job had a lot to do with the individual shops around base whether it was maintenance, low observable, fuel systems repairs or other specific shops. Coming back, we are now more focused on making sure that the water is safe and other initial things are good to go. Our job now is different in that we have heightened our frequency of water sampling and with a lot of people working here we have kicked up our air sampling as well to make sure that people are actually safe in the environments they are working in. Our job is definitely more challenging now but I feel that we have a good base line and we are starting to grow from there.
I have no doubt that things are going to keep getting better and better every day and it is completely evident. I hope Airmen take advantage of all the opportunities they are presented and I think that this recovery is a great thing to be a part of. I hope they keep a positive attitude and an outlook on the brighter future.”
