LANSING, Mich., Dec. 18, 2018 – The Michigan National Guard’s 1st Battalion of the 119th Field Artillery Regiment, will fire a 19-Cannon Salute in honor of Michigan’s new governor, Jan. 1, 2019 at approximately 11:25 a.m. from the Capitol building lawn in Lansing.
Ceremonial rounds typically do not break glass or cause other damage however, the public is encouraged to remain at a safe distance and to share awareness of the ceremonial firing with friends and neighbors. A safety team of Michigan Guardsmen will be onsite during the inauguration events.
“While the salute has been a tradition since Michigan’s statehood was established, it is important to inform the public,” said Col. Joseph Cognitore, director of logistics for the Michigan National Guard and coordinator for the 2019 inauguration events. “If you are in the Lansing area, please share this information with your friends and neighbors, particularly those who might be startled by the sound.”
