Soldiers, families and children gathered in front of the speakers’ podium, the Grafenwoehr elementary school choir and a massive tree ready to be lit at U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria in Grafenwoehr, Germany, Dec. 11, 2018. The tree lighting ceremony is an annual event hosted by the base and USO to kick-off the beginning of the Christmas season.

Several community leaders spoke to the crowd, including the 7th Army Training Command’s Chief of Staff and the Grafenwoehr mayor.

“The tree lighting is a very long tradition. I remember it as a child,” said Grafenwoehr mayor Edgar Knobloch. “Whatever we are doing in Grafenwoehr, we are doing together as a German-American community, and it reflects the German-American friendship.”

Children squealed with excitement as the countdown commenced and the switch was flipped to turn on the Christmas tree lights.

Also bringing cheer to attendees was Clark, the Chicago Cubs baseball team mascot.

Following the Christmas tree lighting, the Grafenwoehr elementary school choir sang several holiday songs, including “Jingle Bell Rock” and “Merry Christmas to You from the Red, White, and Blue.”

To complete the night, an American rendition of Santa Clause and a German Saint Nicholas arrived by fire truck to take photos with children.
