Commander, Navy Recruiting Command Recognizes Sailors of the Year

MILLINTON, Tenn. (NNS) – Commander, Navy Recruiting Command (NRC) Rear Adm. Brendan R. McLane awarded three top preforming Sailors as NRC respective Sailors of the Year.

The annual awards are used to acknowledge the junior, mid-grade and senior Sailors that exceeded all expectations of the NRC mission.

The recipients of the awards are as follows: Engineman 1st Class Carlo Flaccavento, Sailor of the Year (SOY), Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Johana Ortiz, Junior Sailor of the Year (JSOY), and Yeoman 3rd Class Brianna Price, Bluejacket of the Year (BJOY).

"Thank you all for what you have done for Navy recruiting," said McLane.
"Each of you worked hard to earn this award and have all achieved an impressive accomplishment in a very challenging year. Congratulations on a job well done."

Flaccavento said he was selected for SOY because his fellow shipmates took the time and care to develop and teach him. Because of that care, he said giving back to shipmates is part of who he is.

“I make sure that my Sailors have all the tools and resources they need to do their jobs and take care of their families,” said Flaccavento. “I know that our people are our greatest resource and making sure they are taken care of is the only way to be successful either at recruiting or in the fleet. I am so humbled to receive this award. It renews my strength to know that my chain of command recognizes all that I do.”

From the most junior Blue Jacket to the top performing senior Sailor of the Year, the awards program supports Sailor development and a continuation of excellence as they advance in rank.

Price, the most junior of the group, has served in the Navy for less than two years and as the winner of NRC’s BJOY, she says she’s professionally grown through command support.

“My chain of command is responsible for me getting selected,” said Price. “With their mentorship and training I was able to overcome challenges and accepted new ones to become a well-rounded Sailor. It always showed me that if I stay motivate other people around me will be motivate too.”

While all awardees were presented with Navy Achievement Medals during the ceremony, Ortiz was also promoted to the rank of first class petty officer. Advancing to this rank requires a Sailor to have advanced knowledge of their profession and pass a written exam with a high enough score to be selected for promotion. Ortiz says that her Navy training and knowledge played a significant role in her selection as the JSOY for NRC.

“I am very honored to be able to represent CNRC as the JSOY,” said Ortiz. “Everything that I accomplished was not done for any awards or any recognition, I do it because it makes me be a better person and Sailor. Being JSOY means I provide junior Sailors with mentoring and leadership, set an example for them and assist them in any way to accomplish their goals.”

These Sailors were selected for demonstrating the highest talent of Navy recruiting and leadership at Navy Recruiting command expects to see them continue excelling in their career field as recruiters and leaders in their community.

The Navy’s recruiting force totals over 6,100 personnel in more than 1,000 recruiting stations around the globe. Their combined goal is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America’s Navy.

NRC consists of a command headquarters, two Navy Recruiting Regions, 20 Navy Recruiting Districts and six Navy Talent Acquisition Groups that serve more than 1,000 recruiting stations across the country.
