Command Sgt. Maj. Michael S. Burke, senior enlisted advisor, 2nd Squadron, 2d Cavalry Regiment, along with the troop first sergeants, hosted a senior leader ran non-commissioned officer course for Cougar Squadron at the Grafenwoehr Training Area, Germany, at the end of Nov. 2018. The four day course was specifically designed to develop junior leaders in the ranks of specialist to staff sergeant in core NCO principles, tactics and administration.

Junior leaders had the unique opportunity to participate in classroom and field training in an environment where the instructor-to-student ratio allowed for favorable discussions. Senior leaders showed the team leaders and squad leaders what to look for regarding awards, NCO evaluation reports, preventative maintenance checks and services, and counseling when it came to administration. These junior leaders now have what it takes to effectively create the administrative documents that heavily influence careers.

“Wording and verbiage truly matter in these documents,” said Sgt. Terrence Daniels, team leader, Ghost Troop, 2/2CR. “My reputation and my credibility is also challenged if I submit something that does not look professional. It will both hurt myself and the individual’s career that I am rating or counseling.”

Finishing off the week, junior leaders engaged in improving lethality in marksmanship in short range tactics and entering and clearing rooms. Leaders learned how to implement different tactics and techniques regarding different environments when it came to short range marksmanship. Burke gave fellow leaders the keys to success regarding Battle Drill Six – enter and clear a building.

“The [command sergeant major] trained us to standard and not time,” said Sgt. Adam Ortiz, team leader, Ghost Troop, 2/2CR. “We gradually mastered every step, one step at a time. Having this knowledge will now properly prepare us for upcoming live fires and give my Soldiers a better understanding of what to expect when we execute.”
