GROTON, Conn. – Career Counselors from Naval Submarine Support Center (NSSC), New London (NLON) were awarded the Retention Excellence Award (REA) for fiscal year 2018.
The award represents the command's high retention percentage among its command members.
“It feels really great to receive the Retention Excellence Award,” said Navy Counselor 1st Class Erica Ward. “A lot of hard work went into this; we are an office of two that also services twenty-two submarines in addition to NSSC.”
This year, nominees had to achieve a passing percentage in the annual career information program with a score of 90 points or better, 85% or better on veteran opportunity to work, 100% career development board completions for reporting and professional apprenticeship career track Sailors and 95% overall, had zero fail to submit c-way applications, met all aggregate reenlistment benchmarks of 35% for zone a, 54% for zone b, 64% for zone c, and a total of 5% or less aggregate attrition for FY18.
Command support was an added factor in meeting requirement for this year’s REA.
Of 35 Commander, Submarine Atlantic commands eligible for the award, NSSC was one of only eight selected to receive the award.
“The support to the members from the change of command was vital in helping sailors make the decisions that were best for them,” said Ward. “The positive command climate and overall morale that NSSC fosters encourages a lot of these Sailors to stay Navy.”
In addition to command support, being proactive and engaged in counseling was also a factor in meeting requirements.
“Staying on top of taskings, following instructions step-by-step and time management skills are the key to meeting the yearly program goals,” said Ward. “I’m happy our hard work paid off.”
The scope of NSSC's career counselor responsibilities includes supporting all departments and initiatives to include administrative and personnel; legal; religious; operations; supply; communications; personnel security; information systems; weapons systems maintenance and modernization; weapons handling; and, medical.
