CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait – Senior members of the Kuwaiti military and the 1st Theater Sustainment Command held a bilateral logistics conference here on Nov. 26. The conference was designed to develop collaborative dialogue with Kuwaiti partners that enables them to create a shared understanding of future objectives for the Trans-Arabian Network and other key partner nation capabilities.
“The purpose of the conference was to build relationships with Maj. Gen. Ali Al-Shanfa, the J4 for the Kuwait Ministry of Defense, educate and inform him about the mission and capabilities of the 1st Theater Sustainment Command and explore opportunities to train together for a closer partnership,” said Brig. Gen. Deborah Kotulich, 1st Theater Sustainment Command’s Deputy Commanding General.
Though they communicated primarily through an interpreter, the language of the logistics community was a point they had in common as they conversed about current logistics operations at Camp Arifjan. Following briefings from different sections of the command, Al-Shanfa and his staff were taken on a tour of Camp Arifjan and had the chance to see the progress of U.S./Kuwaiti joint projects and ask questions about the challenges the harsh desert environment poses to maintaining equipment readiness.
“Today was an opportunity to see and learn more about the Army’s logistics programs, and we appreciate the hospitality shown to us by everyone here,” said Al Shanfa.
Security cooperation is a pillar of the 1st Theater Sustainment Command’s mission and with so many assets in Kuwait, the conference was a natural extension of this doctrinal principle, according to 1st Theater Sustainment Command’s Deputy Commanding General, Brig. Gen. Deborah Kotulich.
“This conference achieves exactly the right goals of forming relationships, building trust, increasing partner capacity and generating sustainment capability that our two Armies will benefit from,” she said. “We are a stronger Army and we support and enhance our Partner, the Kuwait Army.”
Part of that support is in the form of sharing best practices for sustainment operations. With the responsibility of sustaining assets spread across the entire CENTCOM area of responsibility over the last several years, the 1st TSC has a wide range of experiences to draw from and share with Kuwaiti military logisticians.
“Maj. Gen. Al-Shanfa has a number of important sustainment initiatives underway that we have great experience with,” said Kotulich. “We have a great opportunity to share our sustainment best practices and lessons learned to enhance the success of his initiatives.”
Future meetings are in the works between the 1st TSC and the Kuwaiti Army, continuing the partnership between the two nations that has been in place for more than 30 years.
