NEWPORT, R.I. — The Program Executive Office Integrated Warfare Systems (PEO IWS) 5.0 Foreign Military Sales (FMS) Team, which included 18 members of Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport’s Sensors and Sonar Department and one from the Ranges, Engineering and Analysis Department, has won the PEO IWS Excellence Award. The award honors a group whose efforts have yielded significant benefits for PEO IWS, recognizing innovation and improvement in the areas of product quality, technical innovation, cost control/schedule acceleration, organizational efficiency and process improvement.
The PEO IWS 5.0 FMS Team has undergone a period of intense development, integration, test and evaluation of the Japan variant of the Undersea Warfare Combat System (UWCS) (AN/SQQ-89A) for the modernization of the first Japanese Atago-class destroyer, DDG 177. The U.S. government's UWCS for FMS program with Japan is outfitting the new destroyers with the latest evolution in the Aegis Combat System (ACS) Base Line 9 (BL9) as part of an overall program by both countries to improve their integrated air and missile defense system.
The PEO IWS 5.0 FMS Team delivered the AN/SQQ-89A baseline to the Japan Maritime Staff Office in the second quarter of fiscal year 2017. Subsequently, the team supported the installation on JS Atago at the Japan Marine United Shipyard in Maizuru and Yokohama, Japan. This event marked the culmination of five years of U.S. Navy efforts in the planning, development, procurement, installation and training of the latest Aegis and Anti-Submarine Warfare Combat System with the Multi-Function Towed Array. This also marks the first international Aegis ship to undergo a major back fit and serves as a precedent for all future international BL 9 and higher ACS modernizations.
NUWC Newport members of the PEO IWS 5.0 FMS Team include: Jason Bellucci, Benjamin Charbonneau, Jason Chin, Matthew Cordes, Kyle Dellagrotta, Ronald Flight, Donaldo Guevara, Adam Gwaltney, Marisol Inesta-Miro, Christopher Kelly, Elijah Kibler, Louis Ladstatter, Joseph Lanza, Kevin Quinn, Melodie Ross, Michael Tobin, Christopher Williams, Eli Wolfang, and Bryan Bohn, a former NUWC employee.
An award ceremony was held at the Washington Navy Yard on Nov. 8.
NUWC Division Newport, part of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), is one of two divisions of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. NUWC Division Newport’s mission is to provide research, development, test and evaluation, engineering and fleet support for submarines, autonomous underwater systems, undersea offensive and defensive weapons systems, and countermeasures. NUWC’s other division is located in Keyport, Washington.
