47th Flying Training Wing Public Affairs

First Lieutenant Mickel McGann, 47th Flying Training Wing Public Affairs deputy chief, was chosen by wing leadership to be the “XLer” of the week, for the week of Nov. 12, 2018, at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas.
The “XLer” award is given to those who consistently make outstanding contributions to their unit and the Laughlin mission.
McGann’s job requires him to have his hand in a little bit of everything at the public affairs office. One of his primary duties is media operations, which includes overseeing interviews with outside media and working with any type of video communication.
“Day-to-day, I make sure the Airmen in the office have the tools they need to succeed and the PA chief has adequate support to complete her tasks,” McGann said.
One media operations effort McGann headed up was the Laughlin Minute, a 30-minute radio show airing on several Val Verde radio stations monthly. The show connects community members outside the base to the military members and their mission in the area.
“The Laughlin Minute helps the community understand that Laughlin does more than fly,” McGann said. “We give back to the community, we aid in community outreach, and we partner with off-base entities to make the relationship between the military and civilian sides stronger.”
McGann chose to volunteer as the Combined Federal Campaign coordinator. The CFC is an annual opportunity provided by the Department of Defense for the military member the opportunity to give to vetted charities.
“My job as coordinator is to make sure personnel on Laughlin know about specific charities, the time frame to give and how to give,” McGann explained. “I’ve learned there are a lot of charities in need, and you don’t always need to give money; you can give time.”
Another task McGann included in his diverse duties, was heading up renovations and updates, not only in the public affairs office, but also at Anderson Hall, a base hub for events, commander’s calls and—most importantly—graduations.
“Having current technology in Anderson Hall helps the base graduate the world’s best pilots every three weeks,” McGann said. “Updated gear in our office helps us support any group or entity on base in their missions.”
Leadership recognized McGann as this week’s “XLer” Because of his unwavering devotion to competing every task in his docket and his habit of continually going above and beyond what is required of him.
“Earning the ‘XLer’ means work isn’t just work,” McGann said. “Things we do here in the PA office have a purpose, and it helps me understand my job, as small as it may be, is recognized by those in a leadership position, and it is a humbling experience. I’d just like to thank the Lord for the opportunity of receiving the ‘XLer.’”
