Students from the Liberty Intermediate School at RAF Lakenheath, England constructed care packages for deployed 48th Fighter Wing firefighter and security forces Airmen as part of the Deployed Soldier Project earlier this month.
LIS students have supported the Deployed Soldiers Project for the past five years. The gesture serves as an on-going collaborative effort between Continuous School Improvement juniors and the National Elementary Honor Society.
“It’s one way the students can show they care by providing the deployed Liberty Wing Airmen a little bit of home,” said Andrea Stanley, Liberty Intermediate School fourth grade teacher and National Elementary Honor Society advisor. “I think that it’s very important for the kids to learn to give back to the community and to realize that selflessness is something that can empower them.”
11 classrooms were challenged create care packages for Liberty Wing defenders and firefighters. Students collected snacks, personal grooming items, entertainment items like DVDs and cards of support.
“I couldn’t be more thankful that these young children are supporting our firefighters downrange,” said Senior Airman Matthew Perez, 48th Civil Engineer Squadron firefighter specialist. “Being away from your family and friends can be tough, and I know that receiving these care packages brightens their day. Knowing that even strangers have them in the hearts and minds must give them comfort while in the field.”
The students mailed the packages on Nov. 14.
“They put their hearts and souls into making the boxes, and they did a great job,” Stanley said.
