3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division

3rd Brigade, 10th Mountain Division (LI) hosted a Veterans Day celebration meal at the Guardian Inn dining facility, Fort Polk, Louisiana, Nov. 8, 2018. The event followed the Vietnam Veterans Welcome Home ceremony hosted by Joint Readiness Training Center and Fort Polk at Fort Polk airfield.
The menu featured steak, seafood, barbeque chicken and various side dishes and special desserts. This event was open to all active duty service members, veterans, retirees and the local Fort Polk community.
“I just want to thank everyone for joining us on this observation of Veterans Day,” said U.S Army Sgt. 1st. Class Antonio Barrett, dining facility manager, Echo Company, 3rd Battalion, 17th Engineer Regiment. “We understand that they paved the way for us to be here today.”
Veterans Day is an official holiday in the United States that is observed annually on Nov. 11. The day was set aside to honor veterans who served in the United States military. Veterans Day also coincides with Armistice Day, a holiday celebrated in other countries to commemorate the end of World War I.
Johnny Davis, 93, was one of the oldest veterans in attendance. Davis served in the Army Air Corps with 3-85th Bombardment Group during World War II, from 1943 – 1945.
Bennett Rodgers and his wife Linda Rodgers traveled from Halifax, Louisiana, to attend both events after hearing about them on KALB. Rodgers served as a U.S. Army infantryman from 1968 – 1971, during the Vietnam War.
“I was watching the news and I saw that the base was having a ceremony,” Linda said. “I went online to get more information and we decided to drive here.”
Attendees of the event expressed their gratitude of the meal to the dining facility staff, as well as other patrons.
Mario J. Sorce works at the installation G4 office. Sorce is a disabled veteran who served 12 years in the U.S. Army as a military police and logistics specialist. He invited Brenda Willis, the Leesville Rotary Club President, who called the day awe-inspiring.
“My hat’s off to the crew,” Sorce said. “Everything is very inspirational and emotional.”
At the end of the day, the 3rd Brigade dining facility staff wanted to make sure that every service member and veteran that attended the event felt appreciated. Their sacrifice and commitment is necessary in ensuring our nation’s safety.
“Thank you to all of the veterans from the past, now and the future for everything that you have been continuously providing this country,” said U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 2 Frank Peterson, the brigade food manager. “We really appreciate it.”
