SINGAPORE – The Singapore Area Coordinator (SAC) held an Armistice Day observation at the Terror Club in Singapore Nov. 9.
The observation included a reading of “Flanders Fields” by Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Nikolas Ross, the ringing of the bell by Logistics Specialist 1st Class James Alipio and a speech from Capt. David Moore, commanding officer of SAC.
“I am honored to play this small role in remembering the brave souls who have gone before us,” said Moore. “November 11, 2018, marks the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended the hostilities of World War I. The armistice took effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, marking the end of a war that changed the face of modern society and still influences our world today.”
The bells tolled are in remembrance of those who served in World War I, honoring the 116, 516 Americans who died and more than 200,000 who were wounded.
World War I officially ended June 28, 1919, with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. The actual fighting between the Allies and Germany, however, had ended seven months earlier with the armistice. Nov. 11 became known as Armistice Day and became an official U.S. holiday in 1926, and a national holiday 12 years later.
On June 1, 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor all U.S. veterans.
